The Rail Trail Flatbread Co: Hudson, MA
Derek and I have been to The Rail Trail Flatbread Co in Hudson, MA before once to eat, and Derek has been a couple times to drink with friends. When I went before, I had a wonderful cocktail that I have been dreaming of since. So, when we wanted to go out for dinner last week, we chose to try out Rail Trail again, knowing they had good food and great handcrafted cocktails from our one visit before. We went on a Tuesday night at 4:00, so we had an easy time getting in and getting a table. However, it got busy quickly as our dinner progressed. The atmosphere in Rail Trail is electric. There is a buzz in the air, and the warmth of the brick oven fire creates a cozy setting for patrons.
We sat down and ordered our drinks. Derek ordered Maine Beer Company Peepers and I ordered a cocktail called The Great Sage. The drinks came to our table, and I was impressed. The Great Sage was well balanced, with a slightly smoky flavor mixed in with the sweet juicy taste. The Great Sage, according to the bar menu, is made up of Del Maguey Mezcal Vida, GrandTen Distilling Craneberry, Lime, Sugar, Salt, and Sage. The bar tenders at this bar clearly know what they are doing.
We then decided to order some food. I considered getting a flatbread, but there was no option for dairy free cheese. This is the only recommendation I have for Rail Trail, as I think more vegans and those of us that are lactose intolerant would dine at the restraunt if a cheese substitute was made available for us to eat. An aged Cheddar cheese would also be good for the lactose intolerant among us.
There were a ton of choices other than flatbread, so I wasn't too worried. Derek ordered the grilled cheese and fries from the kid's menu, and I ordered the Carnittas Tacos.
The food came quickly to our table after ordering. Derek really enjoyed his grilled cheese and fries. Derek loves the fries at Rail Trail, because they remind him of fair fries; hand cut, hot, and delicious.
The Tacos were delicious. The menu describes the dish: pork carnitas, pico, queso, avo lime sour cream, pickled onions, avocado, jalapeno, radish, lime, tortilla. I asked for no queso or sour cream, and instead asked for the aioli. My waitress had the cook put aioli on the taco for me, and gave me a big heaping side of aioli for me to add on. The tacos were so delicious. There were huge chunks of succulent, moist pork. The veggies were vibrant in color and very fresh. Every flavor combined in a way that makes my mouth water as I sit here typing about it. They were easily, the best tacos I have ever had. The tacos also came with a huge heaping side of those fair-like fries.
Derek and I were very pleased with our meal and our drinks. As we were paying, we talked about how we like the restraunt for it's fresh ingredients and hand crafted cocktails. As we were getting ready to go, Derek noticed that the bar was serving Wormtown's Birthday Bash #6. I had the beer recently at the Wormtown Brewery in Worcester, and I needed to have it again. Derek recommended we go up to the bar and order another drink.
We went up to the bar and realized why the cocktails were so good. The bar tender making our drinks was the same bar tender who makes drinks at the Speakeasy in Hudson that is owned by Rail Trail. Derek and I have been to the Speakeasy, and they are known for their ridiculously good, high end, handcrafted cocktails. These weren't just bartenders, these were artists.
Derek ordered another Maine Beer Company Peepers, and I ordered the Wormtown Birthday Bash #6. The beers were amazing, as expected. We sat in the window of the bar, looking over Hudson, admiring the town and it's upcoming bar and restraunt scene.
Overall, if you like fresh ingredients, local beer, and high end hand crafted cocktails, you need to try out The Rail Trail Flatbread Co. You won't be disappointed.
