Nashville, Tennessee

After having the weather turn around our trip to the city the day before, I was excited that Derek and I were going to get to go to Nashville. I didn't want to come all the way down to Kentucky without going to Tennessee. Though I had driven through the state before, I had never had the time to spend there and actually enjoy the state. We wouldn't have time to go to Memphis, but I figured Nashville would be enough.

I was excited as I drove into the state, and then into the city. From the distance, Nashville looked a lot like Boston. I was a little worried that we had come out of our way to go to a city that looked much like the one only 40 minutes from our home. Big skyscrapers lined the sky, and we got a glimpse of the Tennessee Titans Nissan Stadium.

It wasn't until we got into the depth of the city that I noticed Nashville was nothing like Boston at all. This city had a total vibe of it's own. Southern country was literally spewing out of all the seems of this place. I was so excited, and instantly felt like I was in a whole new world. We walked past all the tourists traps that we would find in any big city: Hooters, Melting Pot, Coyote Ugly, and Dick's Last Resort. Instead, we made our way to a bar that I had found on yelp to have the best drinks in Memphis, The Stillery. Derek and I loved the place. He ordered a beer and I ordered a moonshine cocktail. Our bartender was extremely friendly. He told us all the places to check out in Nashville, and he seemed genuinely in love with the city. Everyone in Nashville seemed happy to be there. There was an obviously pride glowing in the natives.

After drinks, we hit Broadway, which is where all the action is in Nashville. The streets were lined with honky tonks and Bar-B-Que joints. It looked like I imagined it to look, the way in looked on TV and in the pictures. Because it was only days before New Years Eve, Music City and The Hard Rock Cafe were setting up the the New Years Festivities. There were stages being set up everywhere. We found out that Big and Rich were playing on the main stage that night. We thought about staying, but with the increasing security, we knew the city was going to be crazy. So, we took note and decided that we should only stay in the city a couple hours and beat the crowd before it got rough.

We walked down Broadway, taking in the country sites. We were already thirsty for another beverage, so we decided to find a place to grab another drink. We heard acoustic music coming from a little bar, and decided to go in. The bar was called The Tin Roof Broadway. The decor of the place was unbelievable, almost like a backyard party mixed with a junk yard. We loved it. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple drinks. The bar was not stocked, as they were waiting to get in a big order for the NYE festivities, so we got a beer and a margarita. We listened to a duo sing country songs by Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and Garth Brooks. I love live music, and this was as good as it gets.

After a drink, we took a little walk to explore the city. We walked around Broadway, and up some side roads. We checked into one restaurant, but the wait was way too long for the short time we had in the city. So, we continued our search.

We ended up at ACME Feed and Seed, and old farmers supply store turned into a restaurant. We ate on the first floor of the establishment. The inside of ACME was beautiful. There was really neat art work everywhere, but still had the feel of an old supply store. I went and grabbed a seat, as it was seat yourself, and Derek went up to order our food. He got french fries, and I ordered Catfish with fries and Collard Greens. I had never had Catfish before. It was good, peppery, but a little drier than other fish that I have had before. The collard greens were delicious. We washed down our lunches with some beers and took in the decor.

We knew we didn't have much longer in the city. The crowds were growing and growing, and security was starting to check people's bags as they walked down side streets. We checked out the Country Music Hall of Fame, though we didn't go inside. We also walked passed the Bridgestone Arena, home of the Nashville Predators.

I wanted to to check out a honky tonk, so we went into Tootsies, which is pretty famous. This was as throw back as you could get. Nothing fancy, Tootsies reminded me of your typical dive bar. Cheap, simple drinks, and a deck gave it charm. If you enjoy fancy cocktails and a sophisticated atmosphere, Tootsies is not for you. We aren't like that, so we enjoyed the heck out of it.

We walked up to the top of the bar to the deck where we could overlook the city. We were able to get a good view of Nashville from here, and snapped a couple of pictures.

At this point, we decided to head home to beat the crowds. Nashville was a fun city for a quick stop. We realized that we didn't need that much time there, and that the couple hours was probably enough. However, we know we could have found more stuff to do if we did spend a couple days there. Overall, we were glad that we ventured from Louisville to hit a second city, and that we checked off another city on my traveling bucket list.
