Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona was beautiful. Rich with culture and fun. It was definitely our "honeymoon spot" stop, a sub tropical destination full of sandy beaches and palm trees.
When we first got to Barcelona, we checked into our hotel, the Melon District. The lady at the desk was very friendly, took our bags and circled best places to go on a map for us.
We took off and got breakfast at the little cafe in the hotel. I got eggs, and a bacon sandwich and Derek got a croissant and yogurt. We both got cafe. We didn't think much of the egg and yogurt.
Next, we decided to do some sight seeing as it was rainy and we couldn't really enjoy the beach. We walked down to the beaches though to look around. It was gorgeous. The streets were lined with beach bars and palm trees. There were also small bars right on the beach.
We then took a walk down to the sights where we got to look at the beautiful architecture. We got a chance to see the Columbus statue, who was pointing out to sea in the wrong direction.
We grabbed some cafe and used the bathroom at a little restaurant before venturing down some side streets. We checked out the cathedral, which was beautiful. We also got to see the works of Gaudi, a famous architect who's work is characterised with flowy lines.
We then stopped for lunch at a great little cafe. Derek got French fries and I was able to try cuttlefish for the first time. It was very chewy, more so than calamari. I had a croquette on the side with salad and fries. Next to us was a bachlorette party from England, Wales, Ireland and Finland. They were very nice to talk to but had something stolen from under there table while eating lunch.
We decided to check into the hotel, so we headed back to the Melon District. The room was very small but comfortable. We had just enough room to walk around our bed, very similar to those in New York City. We decided to take a nap and get refreshed.
After our nap, we woke up and went out to grab dinner and drinks. We stopped at this place called Chicken where Derek was able to get corn on the Cobb and French fries and I got Chicken Paella with muscles. Yum! Derek got a whisky the first round, but when he tasted my Sangria he ordered one for the next round. It was our favorite sangria on the trip.
We walked towards the beach and discovered all the hookah lounges along the water. We decided to stop. We were so glad we did because it was one of our favorite parts of the trip. We got double apple and a bottle of wine to share. The Sheesha was only 15€. It was so relaxing!
We went back to the hotel where we rested for the night and our second day in Barcelona.
The second day we woke up around 10am. We grabbed breakfast at the cafe downstairs. I got two sandwiches, one bacon and one cheese and tomato. We took off for the beach! When we got there it wasn't busy at all which was pleasant surprise. We dipped right in to the water, our first time in the Mediterranean. The water was cool and get very salty, which made it very easy to float.
We then laid out on the beach for a while. Women were sun bathing without their tops, so it was a bit of a different experience for us but we quickly got used to it. Mine stayed on!!!! We are not sun bathers so after about a half hour we got up and walked to one of the little beach bars. There, we shared a pitcher of sangria. Britt had curry chicken wings and Derek got potato chips.
It was Wine and Dessert Sunday (a tradition we have had since we started dating) so we had to get our dessert. We got a waffle drenched in dark chocolate at a cafe on the water and it was delicious.
We decided to walk up toward the other beach to see what that was about but it was way too crowded. Instead, we stopped at another little cafe where Brittany got a pina colada and Derek ordered a bourbon but got a scotch. Brittany also got some tortilla chips and guacamole.
We decided that the first beach was much better after walking through all the crowds, so we headed back towards that way. We grabbed a sangria to share at another one of the beach bars right next to the first one that we went to that day
For dinner, we went to Vitamins, a sort of chain in Europe. We had a great view of the Barcelona beaches while we munched on calamari, garlic bread and fries. What do you think we drank? Another pitcher of Sangria.
We headed back to the hotel early since we had an early train next day. Barcelona was so much fun, and we would recommend it to people that want to have a fun, beachy vacation.
Quirky things we noticed about Spain:
A lack of toilet paper in bathrooms
A lack of toilet seats in bathrooms
The 90s are back...seriously.... genie pants and platform shoes are coming back
You have to ask for the bill, its rude to rush out
Tattoos and baseball caps are very rare
Barcelona beaches were man made after the Olympics
