Vienna, Austria

On our train to Vienna, we realized that there were two train stations in Vienna, and that the one closest to our hotel (within walking distance) was the stop after ours. We asked one of the workers on the train how we could purchase a ticket for that one stop, and he told us that it was okay, and that we could just stay on the train for no extra cost. We were grateful, because the hotel was right next to the train station. When we got to the hotel, Motel One, and realized it was a brand new hotel. It was really nice, and very lavish. They let us go to our room, even thought it was only 11am. The room was beautiful, and the view from our room was magnificent.

We got a little lost finding the city center, but finally found it. Vienna was a lot more modernized than the rest of Europe that we had been to, and we had some mixed feelings about it. It was mostly a lot of high end shops, and I had an image in my head of little huts selling brats. Even so, we did a little sight seeing as he architecture in Vienna is beautiful.

In the park, in front of a palace, we found a little outdoor beer garden Derek and I had a couple of beers. In reality, I really needed to pee. In Europe, you can't use restrooms for free, so we found it useful to stop and grab a drink in cafes every time we needed to use the bathroom. The service took a long time, and I was getting a little antsy knowing that we didn't have that long in the city. So, after we paid our bill, we continued on our way to find lunch.

We took a little walk through the city, past old buildings and cathedrals. We were told that the shopping in Austria was famous, big names like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, but that kind of thing didn't interest us. We could get that in NYC. We ended up finding this really great cafe nestled between some buildings. I had schnitzel, which was humongous, but came with no sides, and Derek had french fries. We shared some bread, and I turned my schnitzel into a sandwich. We split an apple strudel, which Vienna is famous for. It was delicious!

We continued to walk around Vienna, and went down to look at the river. One of the things that Vienna is famous for in Europe is cakes, so I wanted to make sure Derek got some while we were there. We asked a woman in the gift shop where to go, and she pointed across the street. We went in and got Derek a chocolate layer cake, which I had a bite of but didn’t want to indulge in after the Florence incident.

Derek looked online to find a place with good cocktails. We found a place called If Dogs Run Free. We were not disappointed. I had my first Pimm's Cup, and I am addicted. It reminded me of a sweet, spicy, and much better Bloody Mary. It was fruity and spicy, and had cucumber and other garnishes. Derek got an old fashion, and we agreed that this was our favorite part of Vienna. The decorations in the place were really interesting, including a hairy mummy hanging on the wall.

We were getting a little hungry, so we stopped and got a braut off a cart. Instead of slicing the bun down the side, they put it on a rod to make a hole through the middle, and stuck the brawt inside after filling the inside with ketchup. Derek went back to the cake cafe, just in a different location, and got an apricot cake. We sat on a bench and people watched. We saw a guy being taken off in an ambulance, we are not sure what was wrong with him. Sketchy people started coming out as it got darker, so Derek and I made our way back to the hotel to get a good night’s sleep for Prague.

Quirky things about Austria:
  • Brawts are served inside of the bun, as in he poke a hole through the whole bun, fill with mustard and insert the brawt
  • The cakes were the best
  • Everything was about the Opera.
  • crazy weird sculptures
  • You had to pay to use the bathroom in McDonalds
  • The best rated bar in the city was an Australian bar
  • They had some crazy obsession with Australia in general, and had a bunch of "we are not Australia:" souvenirs.
