Boston Public Market
When driving through Boston the other week, we drove past the Boston Public Market. I thought, ooh I would like to check that place out! I had been to two public markets before, one in Portland, Maine and one in Madrid, Spain. I loved both, so I figured I would like the Boston version. Derek saw that one of our favorite bakers Jennifer Lee was going to be there. I was sold on the idea of going, and we made the plan to go.We went to the market last Sunday. The market is open year-round from 8am to 8pm Wednesday through Sunday. Sunday was the perfect day to go as the building had a buzz but wasn't so crowded that we were able to get a table to eat. You can also get you parking validated for $3 for 3 hours. I thought that was a pretty good deal as far as parking in Boston goes.
My immediate reaction was that the market was new and clean looking. There was a code that you had to use to get into the bathrooms which was a little weird, and I had to rely on strangers coming in and out of the bathroom to get the code, as it wasn't displayed anywhere. People seemed excited to we walking around and eating their lunches at the colorful tables and standing eating stations made out of lobster traps.
Next we ventured around the market in search of lunch. I wanted to scope out all the treats so that I could narrow down my choice. We walked through the meat section at the back of the market first, checking out the fresh fish and oysters, lamb chops, and steaks. Then we made our way through some of the center aisles past the smoked salmon and sandwiches and fresh breads.
While in our search. We stopped by to say hello to Jennifer Lee who is a Gourmet Baker out of Malden, MA specializing in vegan, gluten free and dairy free. I wrote a whole blog article about her which you can read here.
I also stopped by Taza chocolate out of Summerville MA. It was hard to walk by as they had three samples out on their display. The vanilla sample they had out was absolutely amazing! And, best of all, all their products are dairy free! We talked a little bit with the employee there and got some information on a tour and tasting which we are hoping to do soon.
We were getting hungry and had made our decision about food. Derek grabbed a soft pretzel from Swissbakers in Allston, MA. He said the pretzel was really good.
I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen from Noodle Lab out of Boston. I hadn't had Ramen since my visit in Guam four years ago and I have been craving it ever since. It was worth the wait. The runny yolk hard boiled egg made the whole dish burst with flavor and the pork was succulent. I can't wait to try other daily specials from them in future visits to come.
Derek and I spent the rest of the time walking around and checking out products. We decided to grab some treats at Jennifer Lee's for our Wine and Dessert Sunday tradition. I got a maple bacon Bourbon Donut and Derek got a chocolate cupcake. They were delicious we took them with us to walk around Boston.
After our walk, we came back to grab some products that we wanted to take home with us. Derek got some cider donuts at Red Apple Farm out of Phillipston, MA. They were deliciously soft and tasty. I also grabbed some Grafton Village Truffle Cheddar cheese from Harlow's Vermont Farmstand. I have been enjoying the cheese all week with red wine.
We went back to Taza and grabbed a trio of chocolates. We picked up a 95% Wicked Dark chocolate bar, the Raspberry NIB crunch bar and the Toffee Almond and Sea Salt bar. They are all delicious and we have enjoyed them through the week.
Derek and I will be back to enjoy the Boston Public Market again. It is a great place to grab lunch. We also loved it for fulfilling our wine and dessert Sunday tradition. Local foods and great Boston people make for a great day.
