Nix's Mate: Boston, MA
In Boston for the day and looking for an affordable dinner? Nix's Mate offers a buck a shuck oysters from 4pm to 7pm daily.Derek and I were looking for something to do on our Sunday afternoon. We decided to venture into Boston. Though Boston is only about a 40 minute drive for us, we only make the trip in only every couple of months. Usually, we venture in for a Bruins game. This time, we were in search for drinks and oysters.
We checked online and found the Ultimate $1 Oyster Guide to Summer 2015. Hopeful that we would find a place doing dollar oysters on a Sunday still, we came across Nix's Mate. It's not typical to find a place that offers oysters for only 100 pennies on a daily basis. I knew I had to try this place out.
After a couple drinks at some bars (check out Derek's blog post on our Boston adventure) we ventured over to Nix's Mate at 4pm on the nose. We walked in and took a seat at the bar. We were thankful that we had come early, as our bar tender told us that the entire restaurant had been rented out for the evening and that they were going to start filing people out at 5:30.
The decor of the restaurant was clean and modern, With clean white walls, and a wood paneled wall behind the bar, the restaurant gave you the feeling that you were in an establishment that was classy, but not stuffy. Though the restaurant is connected to a hotel, it felt very desperate from the hotel, mostly due to its on street entrance and the glass wall between the lobby of the hotel and the bar of the restaurant.
To drink, I ordered a zinfandel and Derek ordered a Super Tuscan. Both wines were delicious. Derek commented that his wine was big, fat, and rich. Mine was more subtle, but satisfied my taste buds.
I ordered a dozen of the $1 oysters. Derek ordered the truffle fries with no Parmesan. When they came, I was impressed by the presentation. I'm always in awe at the beauty of oysters just waiting to be eaten.
The oysters were very fresh and flavorful. To be honest, I'm not sure what kind I got, just that they are from the east coast, as their menu advertises. My oysters came with cocktail sauce, and a vinegar. The horseradish was on a sliced cucumber, which I thought was a nice touch, and of course, I had Tabasco sauce.
Derek loved his truffle fries. I tried one. They were hot, right out of the fryer. This made me happy, knowing that our food had been delivered to us right after it was cooked. One of my biggest pet peeves is getting cold food. They were also delicious, which also made both of us happy.
Our waitress told us about a living social deal for $50 dollars worth of food at Nix's Mate for $25. You can get that deal here.
We will definitely check out Nix's Mate for $1 oysters when we are in Boston again. If you are in Boston, you should too. I'm also interested in trying a couple other things on the menu. The R.I Crispy Calamari, Tuna Tacos, Lobster Roll, and Roasted Scallops are on my food bucket list.
